Awards recognise best in healthcare technology

Some of the region's most innovative and advanced businesses have been recognised at the Medilink Healthcare Business Awards. The event, held at the Royal Armouries Hall in Leeds, was described by Medilink managing director Kevin Kiely as "a celebration of vibrancy and creativity in Yorkshire and Humber’s healthcare technology sector" He said: "Collaboration has never been more important, with regional devolution, increased powers for Local Enterprise Partnerships and the emergence of the Northern Powerhouse, it is critical that the Medilink network is stronger than ever, to ensure the sector remains at the forefront of the changing landscape." Adam Lovell, Yorkshire Business Insider editor, heaped praise on the assembled winners and shortlisted companies. "You guys aren’t just great business leaders, you make a difference, you make lives better, you give people fresh hope, you give people a chance to lead longer and more fulfilled lives – that matters, that’s important," he said. The event was held in partnership with Insider and headline sponsor, the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network.
Innovation Award
Winner: Trio Healthcare
Formed in 2006, Trio Healthcare developed a range of silicone-based medical devices with major clinical advantages over traditional products. In 2012 the company sold its brands to a US multi-national and since then Trio has reorganised and focused on the research and development of a further range of innovative silicone products for the ostomy care sector. Launched onto the UK market in 2015 – the products – manufactured in Skipton – are now sold in 15 countries.

Shortlisted: Brandon Medical, Single Use Surgical

Partnership with Academia Award
Winner: Paxman Coolers
The company and the University of Huddersfield worked initially through a KTP project with the Department of Biological Sciences and later the Innovative Design Lab to conceive, design and develop a 21st century cooling cap system supported by 3D printed tooling technologies. Paxman has also funded a PhD student to continue the biological research, a point which caught the attention of the judges, it's not a one-way relationship but a true partnership with clinical outcomes at the very heart of its development. One uses the academic expertise to create business opportunities, the other uses business opportunities to fund academic understanding and research – the perfect partnership.

Its patented Braintrain2020 is at the forefront of cognitive and behavioural intervention for people who suffer sleep issues – which is one in three of us.

Outstanding Achievement Award
Winner: Sidhil
At the height of the Ebola crisis in West Africa, an urgent call came to Sidhil from the Department for International Development – they needed a company capable of supplying 1,600 hospital beds and mattresses within an extremely short time frame; less than four weeks. With air freight capacity already chartered and logistics plans in place for delivery, meeting this deadline was critical. As the only volume manufacturer of hospital beds in the UK, Sidhil was the obvious choice, and everything rested on the company’s ability to source necessary raw materials and ramp up production facilities to meet the challenge.
Shortlisted: Red Embedded Systems, Quality Context

Beacon for Outstanding Contribution to Healthcare Award
Winner: Martin Doxey, Leeds City Region Innovation Group
Doxey has wide experience at senior levels in the public, private and university sectors. He played a major role in the Yorkshire and Humber Government Office for nearly ten years, latterly as a director, providing support for Medilink's early development and also was appointed as the first chief executive of White Rose University Consortium which brought together Yorkshire’s three leading research universities (York, Leeds & Sheffield) into a formal partnership.
